Hello everyone, my name is Ross, currently reside in Fife Scotland. Decided after 10 years of concentrating on career to get back into doing discos! Having had nothing to do with discos in a decade I found a lot of changes, in particular the disappearance of vinyl and the usage of laptops! Have a rig all up and running and just putting it through a PAT test shortly. Rig includes lazers, dual eyes, chauvet mayhem, NUMARK ICDMIX 3, loud sound system the list goes on!

I can't wait to get started, my main focus will be weddings, private parties etc, due to daft hours in main job it will not be so easy getting to all gigs. However, I have looked at the PRS, PPL and PRS Pro Dub licence sites and I am now totally confused on what licences to get. To be honest, it's a bit of a con, however don't want to foul up, can anybody give me some advice on what licences I will need. For info, my laptop contains tunes downloaded from Itunes and music ripped from CDs.

welcome to the forum! - You'll find a great deal of info by trawling through the forums or using the search facility.

As for licenses, don't worry about PRS or PPL - Leave that for the venue.

Pro Dub, You only 'need' it when you transfer music from one format to another. As you've ripped your CDs many will say you should have a pro dub license.

However, Many don't see the point in the license (myself included) giving you several options.
1) Delete the tracks you've already ripped and only use them from CD.
2) Re-Buy all of your music digitally - Quite a viable option these days as you can get compilation albums for as little as £4
3) Rip to your hearts content and not bother with the license. The whole system has been very poorly implemented and I've yet to come across anyone who's trying to enforce it (even PRS inspectors!)

Personally I stick to buying all my music digitally now, it's instant (no waiting for CDs to arrive in the post), the quality isn't too bad (some websites even provide WAV and FLAC downloads now) and it's not expensive, most new tracks can be had for 69p at www.tunetribe.com

Thanx for the reply. I can imagine this is an on-going debate RE PRS, PPL and Pro Dub, the websites for them are vague and it definately looks a bit of a con. The venues I will be doing will be small to medium size and to be honest it's more for the love of music and putting a smile on folkes faces than making megabucks LOL. Certainly think with the govt making ripping cds to hard drive no longer illegal, they are needing to simplify the licensing etc, however thats a debate for another topic etc.

Looking forward to getting started soon and getting on the road!
